The Underground serves an important function for Loyola students -- a ''casual dining spot'' that affords them a chance to pick up soups, salads, and sandwiches during breaks in the grade grind, not to mention housing the a branch of the quite popular PJ's coffeehouse. There's a reason that the smoke-free cafe is attracting non-collegiates, however; it's fast becoming known as an excellent venue for live modern jazz. It's not unusual, on any given night, to see tributes to Wayne Shorter, Joe Pass or Billie Holiday, and the roster of local greats who perform there includes luminaries like Astral Project and Roland Guerin. In addition, the ''Jazz Underground'' series on Thursdays includes the cream of the Loyola Jazz program's crop, so you can hear New Orleans' next wave of masters while they're still students. -- Robert Fontenot, Jr.
